Photographer Kristín Ásta Kristinsdóttir supports Rights of Children on the Move with her photography exhibition Our Refugee Children. The prints are for sale and all proceeds go to the organisation. The exhibition inspires the viewer to consider the reality of children who are refugees, what their rights might be and what fate has in store for them. Specifically, Kristín Ásta reflects upon the circumstances and feelings of the large numbers of children who have applied for asylum in Iceland.

Kristín Ásta Kristinsdóttir graduated from the School of Photography in January 2023. Our Refugee Children is her first solo exhibition. Kristín Ásta also holds a BA degree in Icelandic from the University of Iceland.
Kristín Ásta chooses to keep the photographs out of focus without the child looking in the camera lens. Thereby she makes clear that the subject is not a specific child’s rights and juridical status, but represents all children in a similar position. The colours in the photographs refer to the national flags of children who have had to flee their home countries and seek protection in Iceland. The children’s body postures are not arbitrary, Kristín Ásta has chosen specific postures that reflect the fate of individual children – whether they have been granted international protection or not.
All children are equal, according to the United Nation’s Convention on the Rights of Children, and should be granted equal rights, no matter where they live, what language they speak, religious beliefs or status of their family. A child should never be treated unjustly. Opinion is divided on issues regarding refugees and asylum seekers in Iceland. It is important to safeguard the rights of every child.
