Lu Hong sýndi fljótlega myndlistarhæfileika og hóf skipulegt myndlistarnám undir handleiðslu Zhu Daxions. Hún fékk inngöngu í æðsta myndlistarskóla Kína árið 1981 með kínverska landslagsmálun sem sérgrein. Lu Hong kynntist Íslandi í gegnum íslenska námsmenn í Tokyo og fékk þá mikinn áhuga á landi og náttúru. Hún kom því hingað til lands árið 1990 og hefur síðan þá reynt að kynnast landinu og túlka það sem hún sér með aðferð kínverskrar landslagsmálunar.
