Acrylic on canvas, 2018. Title: The system and the life
Hallgrímur Helgason is nowadays more known as a writer than as a visual artist, however he started his career as a painter and is still painting. He has held more than 30 solo exhibitions, here in Iceland and abroad and has taken part in even more collective exhibitions. His work can be found in most museums in Iceland but also in a museum in France as well as in private collections everywhere in the world.
This painting “The system and the life” was made in 2018 and his one of his first work in the “new style” he presented first at a MeToo exhibition Klof og prí$ at Tveir Hrafnar Art Gallery in 2019 and then after in the exhibition at the community center of the Neskirkja church in 2021. This work shows the oppression of the “bureaucrate” and describes how he can “fuck up” the life of ordinary people, not least women, with little effort and even less interest. What he processes in 5 minutes can take people that are affected by his actions their whole life to deal with. This work fits therefore perfectly to the struggle for the rights of children on the move and to the support of refugees in general.
